'The Conversion Scene', Oil on Canvas, 60 x 84 cm

Through painting, Salisbury creates a visual language for the processes and forms our minds and bodies are made out of, but we often cannot see or name.Inside the bodily landscapes, repeated grass-villi marks and pink spongy forms create a sense of overproduction, like a bodily function has gone wrong. Gaping mouths and heavy black voids push and pull the surrounding fleshy forms.Since becoming a Christian, her paintings are still itching, groaning, blushing and bloating. But now her figures also become light and airy, swept up by the cool of a breeze: God’s life-giving breath, The Ruach. The figures’ torsos grow flowers and their limbs dance in the wind, rejoicing in the understanding that the Ruach moves through them.Still, hairy shrouds pour from the figures' heads, as they fail to fully grasp things that are abstract and invisible, even when they dwell within them.Visceral and mysterious, made from 'dust' and 'spirit', the paintings stretch between worlds. They flit between provoking associations with a garden and the inside of an ear, a disease and a moonscape; the viewer is invited to swim through the internal bodies created.

Salisbury is the Artist in Residence at The Royal High School, Bath (2024-2026.) She received a First Class BA Hons in Fine Art with Art History from The Slade School of Fine Art, UCL (2024) and was the winner of the Bloomsbury Festival ‘New Wave Art Prize’ (2024).
